Effective Authoring with Structured Documents
1-day workshop
XML and SGML projects are often motivated by a need for document interchange,
for archiving documents in a standard form, or for processing a
single document in many ways. However, creating the actual markup is
unfortunately often seen as a burden for authors.
This day-long workshop for experienced FrameMaker users demonstrates
how FrameMaker's structured interface can in fact improve the
authoring process. It emphasizes FrameMakers editing tools
and user interface rather than the markup languages. The morning session
itemizes numerous tasks that can be more easily accomplished using an
element structure rather than the paragraph-sequence model
of traditional documentation software. Examples include:
- Items common to many XML and SGML tools such as:
- Context-based formatting
- Easy rearrangement of sections and other multi-paragraph
elements
- Reducing the number of format or style names an author
must memorize
- FrameMaker-specific operations such as:
- Manipulating markers in the Structure View
- Using attributes to find cross-references to a particular
source
The afternoon session gives participants hands-on exposure to
structured editing.
